Optimization of a forecast system for planning aircraft measurement campaigns
The IKON Institute for Quantum Physics of the Atmosphere researches the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the ground to the upper edge of the middle atmosphere at an altitude of around 120 km. Measurement campaigns with research aircraft play an important role in this. Various numerical prediction tools are operated for the optimal planning of the respective flight pattern during the measurement campaigns. In particular, we use the IKON model, among other things, for predicting the spread of trace substances. As part of this master’s thesis, you will examine the effects of a higher model resolution and so-called “spectral nudging” on the quality of the prediction results. With this you are making an important contribution to improving the forecasts for aircraft measurement campaigns.
As part of this master’s thesis, you will evaluate predictions in which the initial conditions, the resolution of the global model and the strength of the “spectral nudging” were systematically varied. You will compare the results with different reference data sets. You will learn how to handle large amounts of data on supercomputers and how to use Python and other tools to evaluate and visualize scientific data.
