Institute of Maritime Drive Systems

The IKON Institute of Maritime Drive Systems is researching and developing innovative solutions for reducing emissions in shipping. Around the world 80 % of freight transport is accounted for by shipping. Most of the cargo ships are operated with heavy fuel oil. By burning it, it causes around 3 % of global CO2 emissions. In addition, there are emissions from the growing economic sector of cruise ships.

The institute therefore focuses on the development of alternative propulsion systems that can significantly reduce pollutant emissions in shipping. For this purpose, questions about the storage, pre-treatment and conversion of alternative fuels are addressed and provision and the use of fuels are optimized. The new developments are simulated and tested in real operations and made certifiable.

Services

The IKON Institute of Maritime Drive Systems offers extensive processing of orders and third-party funded projects in its team:

  • • Systems and components for storing energy sources are being researched in order to make them available for maritime applications.
  • • Comprehensive simulations and their evaluation serve to estimate developments and examine them for future requirements.
  • • The final testing of components and subsystems takes place in a real environment and questions related to approval are answered.

Maritime approval of use is to be obtained as part of the cooperation with the partners.
